x^2-18=0

Add 18 to both sides

x^2=18

Take the square root of both sides

x= +√18 and -√18 or you can write it as:

x= √(9*2) and -√(9*2)

x= 3√2 and -3√2

x^2 - 18 = 0

Move the -18 to the right hand side.

x^2 = 18

Now, take the square root of both sides, keeping in mind that we have to include "plus or minus" when doing so.

x = +/- sqrt(18)

18 can be expressed as 9*2, so

x = +/- sqrt(9)sqrt(2)
x = +/- 3sqrt(2)
