Considering the translation from book to film was so well done for this series, I'm not sure it makes a huge difference either way. If you do read the books first, however, you are going to want to watch the extended editions of the movies, just because they contain much more of what was in the books.

i watched all three movies and then read the books... while i was reading the books- i could imagine it very clearly because of the movie... the books just added extra information to the plot-but the writers of the movies did a great job of making the book into a movie so there wasn't a lot of plot changes...etc. If you aren't good at keeping up with the story of a movie or something... i would suggest reading the book first. If not, then it doesn' really mater(i would go with movie first so i don't go crazy trying to find out what happens for another 100 pages :P)

No doubt about it, read the books first! There is a lot in the movies which is terribly confusing to someone who hasn't read the books because it is not explained very well. Plus, it's best to let someone have the experience of reading the books without knowing what is going to happen. The movie is just as fun when you know what is going to happen since it is mostly about the visual aspect of the story.

Books, Lord of the Rings or other, should always be read before watching the movies based on them.

I like reading a lot but I would watch at least the first movie before I started reading those books to see if they hold your interest.

Watch the movie. It is too different from the book. It is practically a different story. But it is a good movie. See it and enjoy it then read the books and enjoy them. If you read the books first, you'll be upset an the creative inclusions and the infuriating omissions. (Where does a gal have to go to see a Barrow Wright???)

Almost all the fans of The HObbit and The Trilogy were disappointed in the movie, so I would go with seeing the movie first and then reading the books.

I am an avid reader but somehow I never read the "Lord of the "Rings". My roommate gave me a DVD for Christmas, I didn't understand it at all. Then my son gave me a DVD player for Christmas and 3 of the tapes for Lord of the Rings. I still couldn't get it, so I would say, defiantly read the series first!!

I think you understand and enjoy the movie more if you read the books first. The books have way more detail and I really don't think it spoils the movie.
