Some people are affected by the reduced oxygen levels at as low at 8,000 feet, well below the height many tall mountains.

However at approximately 30,000 feet, approximately 1000 feet higher than mount everest there is not enough oxygen to sustain respiration in anyone.

Less than 6 persons are documented to have climbed mount everest without supplemental oxygen. Most people suffer severe altitude sickness above 20,000 feet without it.

There are records of communities living for long periods in the Andes at heights of about 19,000 feet.

Fit people are usually okay up to about 21,000 feet. Above this height, their physical and mental condition deteriorates due to the shortage of oxygen, and the higher, the more rapid the deterioration. At 30,000 feet, almost everybody would die in a few hours.

This is why it is so hard to climb mountains of more than 26,000 feet. The climbers are starting at 21,000 feet, and racing against their own steadily decreasing fitness.

Above 7,500 metres the digestive sytem shuts down, which is bad news! The "Death Zone" starts at 8,000 metres. Above that altitude there's not enough oxygen to sustain life, though that doesn't mean you'll die instantly - you just can't stay there.
