a cocktail party is like semi formal ish.
so you can wear a dress, a suit, a skirt suit, or a nice shirt and skirt or pants. The skirt should come to just above your knees or cocktail length which is half way down the calf. A nice pencil skirt and blouse would be perfectly acceptable. I love dress's and i feel like women dont wear them enough. It should be an evening dress that comes to the knee or cocktail length. The signature cocktail party atire for women is the LBD (little black dress)...dressed up with some jewellery.
You can wear pants and a blazer over like a cami or something. and heals!
...no denim or casual skirts or pants, not day time tops...go for a bit more dressy.

Definetely no "two piece" ensembles... you should invest in a nice cocktail dress. You don't have to go overboard and spend a fortune. Personally, I would recommend that you wear something either just off the shoulder (a wrapped look) or wear something that is completely "shoulderless". There are many awesome looks that are acceptable, but I think you should stick with one color, no pattern. Black is always classic. I also recommend a fitted top and perhaps a flaired bottom... 1950's style... it is making a great comeback. Also a nice straight cut all the way is a timeless classic. Pair with a great pair of heels and you are the belle of the ball!
Oh... if you choose a straight cut look, also pair with a wrap for a more finished sophisticated look. If you choose to carry a purse, I don't recommend anything with a strap... find a coordinating clutch that matches your dress. Macy's has some gorgeous new clutches out right now!

For a cocktail party always wear something like a dress skirt or top that shows possible promise of good things to come later in the night and I guarantee you will get many offers of dinner and shows for later.

Cocktail parties vary in dress codes. A classy dress is nice...not too short or too low cut. A nice skirt and a dressy top would be fine. Good luck =)

For a cocktail dress, it's okay to push the envelope a bit. Just don't go beyond what you feel comfortable in.

A dressy skirt and top would be fine. Don't wear anything too casual. A beaded top would be perfect.

I like women in jeans. It creates them look more home town like and it generally does not look like they try too hard but if you are trying to get this folks attention, this may not be what you want
