Start off by going to your bank and opening a secured line of credit (secured credit card). These are savings accounts where you initially deposit money and depending on your credit file they can match up to double the amount of the funds in credit.
Make sure you never miss a payment, and with in a few months you'll start getting solicitations for unsecured credit cards. Make sure you read the fine print because the initial solicitations are going to come with astronomical fees and interest rates. I had a friend who accepted one of these initial cards, and her first bill was for more that the line of credit she was approved for!
After about a year, your own bank will probably transfer your secured funds into a separate savings account and your secured card will become a regular credit card.

Type in, credit credit cards for bad credit on your computer and you'll get a list of companies such as Orchard Bank, etc that offer credit cards for people with blemished credit. The only thing is you will pay a higher interest rate and maybe a yearly fee, and have a credit limit of about $300. They are good for people trying to get there credit back on track.

You can certainly apply and you will get a higher rate. There are also secured cards, where the credit card company sets up a limit against funds you deposit, in the move to ultimately giving you a proper card.
Best of luck.

Get a secured credit card.
Or you can go to orchard bank, but they will charge you a lot of fees. It could help if you want to re-establish your credit.
Some places are more lenient. I felt that the bank of america card was somewhat easy to get.
