I am looking to get an older model car and have a guy selling a 84 lesabre for $900.It has 100k original miles. Its a V6 and in pretty good shape. I test drove it and the service engine light was on. The only thing it would need cosmtically would be weatherstripping on the driverside door.

My question is how easy are these cars to work on? And what would be some major things to look at on the vehicle before purchasing it. I know a little bit about cars and would know where to look but not what to look for.
Are they notorius for any big problems

I cant work on my 1989 LeSabre myself with all the computer gadgets
BUt it doesn't cost too much to have repairs done- except for the Dynaride suspension

Drivers door weather stripping replacement is common
so is replacing the upper manifold gasket

Have it checked with a mechanic before you buy it. You may have to pass an emission test in your state and the check engine light may cost you some money to get fixed. I believe they had the 3.8L V-6 engine and there are a bunch of them out there. Look at Kelly blue book to get an idea of the value of the car. www.kbb.com will get you there. Good luck.

The price seems O.K. Get the engine light checked out. Have the mechanic check the car out at the same time. If everything seems to be in order, go for it.
