the Pilgrims were Puritans... the Puritans were simply a group that wished to reform the Anglican church when they made their pilgrimage to America they were Pilgrims...

The Pilgrims fled to the new world in the Mayflower for religious freedom. They may or may not have been puritans, which is a religious sect of christianity.
