First of all when you speak orf calcium do you really know what your talking about electrochemically. There is no mechanism. The body regulates this through concentration gradients- or polarization.

Are you referring to the endplate or where there is propagation of the wave? There are ATP dependent Ca++ pumps on the membrane. They are also present in the muscle.

that's because it's not yet fullly understood. calcium and sodium channels in the frontal lobes are linked to bipolarism, and thus calcium and sodium presnapsis has to do directly with brain metabolism. this is why bipolar patients respond well to anticonvulsants, but the exact nuerochemistry is unknown to date.
