How do i make the background of a picture transparent instead of white?

i have a picture of a avatar and the background is white and i want it 2 be transparent so that i kan make a sticker. How do i make it transparent?

You need to open it in an editor and set the background to transparent. This would also need to change it to .GIF format.

Change it to PNG format with Macromedia Fireworks.
