I would like to try to grow my own for the fun of it. Anyone else ever try this?

While it is easier to buy the seeds, I agree it's more fun to grow your own. Gray striped seeds, often called mammoth sunflowers due to their mature size (I've had them grow to 15ft.!) are the easiest to grow and to subsequently split for eating. Stay away from black oil sunflower that have really beautiful flowers but are very difficult to get the seed out of the shell. They are great, however, for the birds, so you may want to plant both varieties if you have the space.

I have in the past.
Don't do it. It is easier and cheaper to buy David's Sunflower Seeds. They are the BEST!
