This is a bit of an asterisk answer, but the 1998 Yankees won more games that season than any other team in a single season with 125 (playoffs included, which is why it is an asterisk).

The team with the overall best record through all time is the New York Yankees with a 9289-7094 record. the single season record is a tie between the Seattle Mariners of 2001 Seattle Mariners and 1906 Chicago Cubs, however, the Cubs have the best winning percentage, as they played 8 fewer games for the season.

As far as winning records, that title goes to the Boston Red Stockings of 1875, who went 71-8 (.899) in the National Association.

However, looking only at more modern records, that would be won by the Chicago Cubs, going 116-36 (.763)

If you're forcing a 162-game schedule, the best record would go to the 2001 Seattle Mariners, going 116-46 (.716)

However, if you mean which franchise has the best winning record, that would go to the N.Y. Yankees, at an overall 9289-7094 (.567), followed by the New York/San Francisco Giants, at 10113-8633 (.539)

If you're the historical type, I'll give honourable mentions to the Providence Greys. In their 8-year stint in the National League from 1878-1885, they went 438-278 (.612), winning two pennants, and only falling below .500 in their last year in the league.

For a single season, the 1906 Chicago Cubs; they went 116-36 for a percentage of .763 (the 2001 Mariners also won 116, but lost 46 that season for a winning percentage of .716). However, the Giants (New York, now San Francisco) have won more games than any other team in baseball, with 10,037 wins in the books.

To add: Killer Klingon, you said: "no sports team in the history of professional sports has a better winning record than the New York Yankees". The Yankees have a franchise win-loss percentage of .567, tops in baseball. However, the Miami Dolphins for example, have a win-loss percentage of .589, and the only perfect season with a world championship. The Dallas Cowboys have a winning percentage of .568. I think that trumps the Yanks.

The question is vague at best. It does not specify single season or career winning records. I will have to say that the 1998 Yankees had the best record ever. They won 114 regular season games and 11 games in the playoffs. That gives them a season total of 125 wins. All the other teams with those phenomenal records lost in the playoffs

THE REDSOX SUCK! Have always sucked. And will always suck.

A die-hard Yankee fan.

You can all give me thumbs down now. Redsox fans are petty.
