ease up on the TV, Computer and videos games. Play actual board games with them. Do something with them that takes time, yet holds their interest. Get out the playdoh. Show by example.

8 year olds are at a very exciting stage. They're really leaving babyhood behind & growing up & becoming more aware of the world around them. There's so much that grabs their interest. Their attendtion span can be good when you find something that really interests them. As a teacher I found that I could make use of this to gently chanel this interest into other things that I wanted them to focus on.
One child I taught was passionate about hunting with his dad & I was able to use this to help him to improve his reading, writing & maths skills.

Definitely lessen the television watching. Get the child involved in more active activities (sounds redundant, huh?).

It is also proven that a reduction in sugar intake can improve a child's attention span, particularly those with ADD/ADHD.

more time in the sandbox, crafts, watching birds, painting, sanding wood, hammer and nails, basketball/hockey/baseball get them into reading.

get them talking.. talk to grandma for twenty minutes . strengthen interpersonal intrapersonal naturalistic artistic and kinestic inteligences and help them build passions that they can focus on.
