I heard of an old music school trick where you just hit any note and it sounds good, does anyone have any idea on this?

I am a music teacher, and a trick that I use with my young kids while playing instruments is to only give the the notes of a pentatonic scale to play. So any note you play using one of these scales can be made into a melody, and it will always sound good. For instance, in the key of C pentatonic, you can play C-D-E-G-A.... F pentatonic you can play F-G-A-C-D...

ummm..yes it is called "playing by ear"....when you simply play musical chords that mix well together etc...so when you say "any note"...they actually are real notes that make sense when you begin to mix them together and make some sort of harmony..kind of like..making up vocal ryhme with words and putting them together....

kinda hard to explain...
