A good current affairs topic could be that for the first time in US history single women outnumber married women. It's relevant, interesting and could have a significant social impact. Your report could examine why this situation has happened. Are women mostly pleased or displeased to be single? How does society in general feel?

Or the controversy concerning the "F" word by Ann Coulture, other celebs and politicians have made similar statements and the public pressure made some of them either seek counseling or go into rehab. The report could focus on whether Ann is largely immune from censorship or whether the punitive actions being taken by newspapers dropping her columns and pulling their ads from her website might finally cause her to be more diplomatic in making future comments.
Newspapers dropping her columns:

If you like pro baseball, that's always a sure thing to run in the newspaper from March through June, as the pre-Season ends and the Season cranks up prior to the All-Star game (unless there is a lockout, which isn't the case this year).
The Iraq War might be out as a topic, but if you're interested in human interest feature writing, you might ask your Prof if you can follow local or nearby stories of this type ("Jane Jones comes back from Iraq," "Johnny Smith goes back to Iraq", "Ladies' Group knits for the troops" or whatever).

Two off the top of my head:
How the world is not going to meet the Millenium Development Goals by 2015. The G8 has a lot of blame in this. What role does your government have in this?
Anything to do with the genocide in Darfur. With the way the UN is going with this, the genocide is going to continue for a lonnng while. What are people in North America doing to help?

Pick something close to home since you'll be expected to interview people. I'd suggest hitting your city hall and school board. Find some issue that's interesting and be prepared to sit through a lot of boring, long meetings (which will prepare you for the real world of journalism). And remember a couple of key rules:
Tell your editor and readers something they didn't know before in each story.
Tell your editor and readers why it matters to them personally.
