Asus are good computers. I suggest looking at Acer or Toshiba and Asus. They are all good computers.
I work in IT and deal a lot with laptops. do not get Dell, HP or Compaq, i see a lot of computers to be repaired and these three make up about 75% of them, they are overpriced and unreliable.
Also don't get an IBM because they are not made by IBM any more, they are overpriced and over rated.

i warn you against the m1210 from dell. Although it is flashy and different from you normal laptop, it is overpriced, underpowered, and a failed design by dell to try too hard to fix something that isnt't broken. Here is my list in order for you based upon the amount of money you want to spend....
If money truly is not an issue, get an Alienware mALX laptop found at
www.alienware.com
If you can spend a lot but not too much, get the Sony Vaio VGN model priced at around $2100

Otherwise, for your basic computer laptops for the everyday student looking to up his game, get this....

permit me preface by pointing out that i'm an approved Dell and HP Reseller. I particularly have not something against Macs in any respect. in actuality, i'm surprisingly inspired by the present Macbooks. in case you prefer the Microsoft working gadget, the Dell Vostro workstation has been my contemporary %. for suited fee for lowend laptops. for my area, you're comparing apples to oranges. they don't evaluate to one yet another as they the two have diverse reward. My professional opinion: Macbooks - stable (outfitted on Unix platform), sturdy classes, trouble-free, extra inflexible standards, extra perfect video modifying capacity, means to run XP in simple terms approximately (making use of utility). Dell Vostro - Comes with XP or Vista, versatile with utility, a lot of hardware thoughts, much less high priced. i prefer to propose you talk on your instructors first and ask what they are going to be making use of. finally, you will discover much less problems in case you whichever platform they're making use of.

Toshiba's are by far the best I have ever owned. Check out Toshiba at: http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/laptops.to?coid=-26368
Then scan the Internet for a good price. I got a refurbished one for 20% less than a new one 5 years ago and it has preformed fantastically.
