Taiwan has already been SEPARATED from China since the end of World War II. Selling weapons to the Nationalists (KMT - Chiang Kai-Shek) started before China became the People's Republic of China (1949). The Americans chose to support Chiang Kai-Shek and the KMT in order to help the Chinese people fight against the Japanese in World War II (1939 -1945). Unfortunately, the Americans supported an anti-democratic dictator who lost the support of the Chinese people and the Civil War. Since the Chinese Nationalists were always ready to buy America's older and used weapons, it was a good relationship. This relationship still exists today in Taiwan (KMT or DPP) - and where there are weapons, there is money to be made - big money.

The Taiwan Relations Act (TRA), voted into law by the U.S. Congress on April 10, 1979, states that the United States should "provide Taiwan with arms of a defensive character".

This law was enacted to counteract the switch in official diplomatic recognition from the Republic of China (Taiwan) to the People's Republic of China (China) in 1978. The TRA also established the non-government organization that handles US-Taiwan relations, the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT).

The basic impetus behind this law has been debated endlessly since it was passed. However, the TRA is the legal basis behind U.S. arms sales to Taiwan.

Although this is not stated in official policy, it is still true - it is in the BEST INTEREST of the U.S. for Taiwan to remain a U.S. ally and to remain separate from China. Look at the map of Asia and follow the line of U.S. influence in the Asia Pacific. The U.S. projects its force from South Korea in the north, through Japan and Taiwan and into Indonesia - China is surrounded by U.S. allies.

If Taiwan becomes part of China, the U.S. has lost part of that circle, and now it only projects its continuous influence through Hawaii, since Taiwan would offer a "way out" for China.

There are many other reasons for the U.S. to support Taiwan. It helps bring some stability in the region because evenly matched enemies are less likely to attach eachother than when one party is very weak and the other is very strong. Also, the U.S. is always keen to support a democracy.

Long story short. The U.S. sells weapons to Taiwan because:
1. They are legally obligated to provide Taiwan with defensive weapons
2. It's in their best interest to do so.

um, Taiwan is already separate. It got its success all by itself without any help from china's government, thank you very much.

It has been separate for 60 years after Chiang Kai Shek gave up on taking over China and has been a fortress since.

Americans are quite happy to profit. Taiwan has a need that china creates by spending 17% of its GNP on weapons and saying strange things.

James, James, James..... of course Taiwan is a separate country from China. The only reason Taiwan needs weapons is to protect themselves from attacks by the Axis of Evil. And don't forget that Communist China is now spending 17% more on attack weapons.

I did not know that the Americans sold weapons to Taiwan. I didn't think that Taiwan had much of a defense force capability. If they have sold weapons to Taiwan, it must be for the profit of the arms merchants. America and Russia are two of the biggest arms merchants I believe.
