It is in the original constitution. The founding fathers thought that it was of utmost importance that the president be born in the US as a matter of principal as much as a safeguard to the new country. If a Frenchman had been elected president, how would the people know that that person would not "sell them out" to their original country. In the early days of the US that was very important. Especially as we were involved in wars, etc. and floundered.
At this time, I don't think the importance is the same as it used to be...but, would you be comfortable with the leader of the US to be originally a Saudi or an Iranian? Would you trust that their loyalties were to the US or are the loyalties to their country of origin? I don't think there is a problem with Arnold, but I might have an issue with someone from one of those other countries. You can't say that Austrians are OK, but Syrians are not. It is one way or the other.

it's only right. it's hard enough to be able to trust the presidents that were born here much less some other man from a different country. we have enough problems already. and they say we are free.... nothings free
we already have to press 1 for english when it's our native language. if a person from a different country with a different language came to be president here then we would have to press 3 for english..cause that language would be 1 and spanish would be 2 then english would be 3. not a very nice thought...
I already have to find english writing on a can of corn.. man that stinks to live in your own country and can't read a can of corn... I don't go over to any one else's country and expect them to have english on their cans of corn...
I don't mind them being here if they would adapt to our life styles and languages before they get here. OH, Yeah and learn how to use birth control... we have to many kids on welfare to feed.

It was written into the original constitution. Article 2, section 1
The minimum age is 35, not 40.
Minimum age for a senator is 30, Article 1 section 3
Minimum age for a House Representative is 25, section 2

It is from the original Constitution.
To answer why, think about a Chinese government official becoming a nationalized American and running for president. Or a Saudi, or and Indian.
The power of money in our political process and elections is immense. This is a safe guard.

Its in the Constitution. The President must be an American native and be at least 40 years old.
Thanks 5centsworth, I was just trying to remember it off the top of my head. I do believe its 40 for a senator though.

I believe it was in the original Constitution in the fourteen amendment.
A person born in another country cannot be a U.S. president because they could betray the United States when they become president.
