I recently was looking for an employee and had several applicants. On a Friday had a few stop by and fill out applications and I met with all of them. Discussed over the weekend the qualities in everyone. Monday morning one of them called and asked if I had had a chance to decide. I was leaning towards him, but he showed more interest in getting the job, so he started that Wednesday.

You should send a thank you note thanking the interviewer for his/her time and then reminding them why you are the best one for the job.
Phone calls can sound desperate, and no employer likes to hire a desperate employee, but thank you notes show a level of business sense that you just cannot teach someone. They either have it, or they don't.

If you really want the job call them they will see you are serious about working for them. What can it hurt the most they can say is sorry we don't need you right?

A letter or email thanking them for the interview is good etiquette. A phone call can make you seem over-eager.

YES! IT SHOWS THAT YOU WANT THE JOB. I work construction and i have gotten many jobs by calling every day.
