We know the Earth's indirect speech too well through that which we are most familiar with - the medium of our bodies. For the purpose of theory it is refered to as just "body". This idea of body is often thrown together in the idea of "body and soul". Knowing the speech of the body is to know its visceral pain. It's no mystery there was a time of "mystery cults" centering around nature worship, like the Eleusinian Mysteries.

The problem for many could be over-familiarity with body: whatever the Earth is saying through the medium of body is taken for granted as "all there is", whereas, the experiences the body provides seem to be deficient in some comprehensible way, as there are many whom we know despise all that is body.

My answer is that the Earth does not speak directly to mankind, only through an imperfect and fallible medium. The Earth may demand our loyalty. To me, though, this is superfluous. I could be mistaken or just not willing to give over to Earth my soul should it be separable from body.

*Addendum. Obviously skepticism is at work in my answer, but I feel confident in saying the body is like a tool to be used properly. Not using it to capacity may be akin to improper use; the ancient cults understood this. Civilization, orderly society, requires we ignore and restrict some strong instinctual desires.

So for the last few thousand years we have been developing various clever ways to maintain the level of civilization already built up, occasionally slipping a few knotches down. What the Earth is saying to mankind, if we take "mankind" to be related to the benefits of civilization, is gainsaid in our impulse toward civilization. There is a dissonance in this struggle. When we feel a harmony, we've acheived a balance, albeit temporary.

Instead, perhaps reverse the question: If mankind could speak to the Earth, what would we say?

I wanted to start the largest and most inventive chain mail spam ever the other evening... but instead, you pose a legitimate question that also allow this type of global "welcome".

I first thought of writing some statistical commentary regarding the recent global Mother Earth warnings of our misbehavior and the slight tilt or wobble of the Earth's axis during the tsunami in India. By sending an e-mail alerting everyone on the planet to jump at the very same moment... or if you were in a predicament and couldn't jump... just making a fist and bringing your fist from the air down quickly and yelling "yeeeeessssssss!" simultaneously. All of this causing so much positive energy in the same direction that it would wobble or tilt the world back in place and all this bad globally weathery destructo-crap and wars and all kinds of disease and stupidity would stop. For just that single moment. Each individual would just stop and count for one single second -- that the entire world took the time to acknowledge his or her own existence... and that the world has taken the time to smile back.

Just for one second... even translated into languages and cultural-specific customs for every individual on the Earth. And the world simply said, "hello."

Earth would say - "Whatever, its your funeral."

No - humanity is not important in the grand scheme.

No - we are not killing the planet - its been here done that before.

Yes - we are killing ourselves - we haven't been here done that before and might not be able to say that we have later.... point being that we don't know so safe, pre-emtive and practical logic rather than the gun-ho and carefree cowboy profiteering seems to be the prudent attitude.

Humanity is a mosquito bite on the skin of the Earth. The Earth feeds us and shelters us, but only so long as we don't irritate it enough to get swatted - again, we aren't that important - hubris is the only reason we assume otherwise.

Stop treading on me like I am just a piece of dirt or else I could implode and take you down. You gouge me, you throw junk in my midst, you ruin my soil with your chemicals, you take too many of my trees, you take and take and once in a while I feel a person spreading lime if needed to enrich my soul again. But, mostly you hurt me...damage the bond between us and I am about ready to blow. Stop this insanity now.....be good to me....take from me but give some back in return. Thank you for listening. (you better listen to me...or.....)
BOOM!

The earth will ask the mankind to stop all it's destrctive activities, think about the generations to come or to get ready to perish soon.

The Earth is speaking to us-through scientists and environmentalists, activists, and you even. What do you think it is saying?

Perhaps: Love me the way I love you-enough to give you life every day, new oxygen to breath, new food to eat, trees and elements to keep you warm and safe from the elements...make the sacrifices for my health like I have made sacrifices for yours.

Okay, Kimberly...

If billions of years of volcanic activity, comet and asteroid strikes and atmospheric anomalies can't put me down, what makes you so arrogant to think that you can destroy me or make ANY difference in less than 200 years?

Thanks, Kimberly...you have a good night/day as well...
