I once had one comment on almost "everything" I was buying. It was annoying because I was in a hurry and she was reading labels and asking questions.

I know! Who the hell do they think they are? People think they are somehow cool because they can issue negative opinions that merely show how unhappy with life they are. Yeah, and at Starbucks it totally pisses me off. If I am paying $5 for my latte, then I will customize it however I want and they can make it without any comments. And the person buying coffee behind me can either go home and make it or shut up and know that some people will be buying a latte so it will take longer. Do they think I really appreciate their opinion? Does anyone? If I want your opinion, then I will ask for it! Especially people who think they are better than you because they have different tastes. I don't care what you like! Grrr... I just wish people wouldn't try to boost their low self-esteem by thinking their tastes and preferences are so great compared to everyone else's. Just buy and enjoy what you like and leave everyone else alone to do the same! I give people the same curtesy! Thanks. I feel better now. Whew~

Of course, they are human and even though the stores try to influence how they interact with customers, they are still there observing. In the little town where I live most retail clerks have not totally had their personalities squelched.... thank god! Didn't embarass or madden me at all, but I was glad they said nothing to me the last time I bought a pregnancy test.

I have them comment, and I don't mind, I kinda like it. It reminds me that these are actual people, not computers. I've heard things such as, "Gonna get some huh?" When I got a nice vodka, condoms, and some candles. Another time I got, "You must be single" due to the fact I was buying beer, snacks and red meat.. I don't mind, all in good fun.. as long as it's in jest, and not disrespectful, I don't mind..

Yeah, I have. I was getting some snacks for the house and the cashier made a smart comment that he think I didn't hear. "Someone needs to get laid and fast."

It was maddening, they wanted to know what I was doing with the combination of products that I was purchasing.

Consider their job - it's BORING. Small-talk is one of the highlights of their day. But if it's turning toward possibly embarrassing, i'll turn the tables on them making them feel like such an idiot for saying something in the first place.

Rarely. Usually the cashiers I deal with ignore me and chat with their coworkers.
