Quick question... does anybody out there know the true story behind the Vincent "Black Widow"? I have heard some people say that it never actually existed, and that the whole thing is just urban legend. Others have said that a handful of them were built before the company went under in 1955. I know that Vincent made about 30 "Black Lightnings" based on the Black Shadow format, but I have never seen a photo of the Black Widow.

Anybody have some solid info? Anybody actually seen one?

Yes, the "Black Widow" DOES exist (somewhere)
I actually SAW one back in the early '70's. In fact, it was 1973, the year I paid $1200 for my '63 Panhead, that I'm still riding today!
It was the FIRST time I saw a 5-digit price tag on a USED bike, and it still sold to some LUCKY bugger the very next day!
Many a heart was broken the day Vincent went belly-up! Even some hard-core Harley riders I know shed a few alligator tears at the demise of this classic legend!

In the summer of 1955, at a Vincent Owner's Club dinner, Phil Vincent announced that the company would not longer manufacture motorcycles. The board of Vincent had decided that the company could no longer function under the continued heavy losses and that production would cease almost immediately. Rather than abandon company tradition of uncompromised quality, it was decided to discontinue the complete range of Vincent motorcycles. The week before Christmas, 1955 the last of these ingenious machines came off the production line and was labeled "The Last."

Never saw one but yeah I think they were real. I have driven a Shadow however, and if the Widow is anything like that beast, the name is well chosen. An excellent bike to kill yourself on. All power, no brakes, quite unruly.

But fun :)

They did indeed exist. I saw a special on Speedvision (I think..) about these great and rare bikes. Could have also been on Discovery or TLC -- try the web sites for these channels.
