Right now, formula or breast milk are the only thing a 6 1/2 month NEED. They need about 30 ounces a day, give or take. I have 4 kids and they were all a little different with their habits.

You can just start them on a little baby food once or twice a day to get them used to eating more solid food.

I attached a really good website that gives you some insight as to when solid food should be given, how much, what kinds, etc.
Here is what they say, to answer your question:

"In the first few months of eating solid foods, how much your baby eats is not as important as the experience of eating. When your baby first starts eating solid foods, she should still be getting the majority of her nutrition from breast milk or an iron-fortified infant formula. She may only eat one or two teaspoons of solid food at a meal.

At about 6 months old, when she has a little more experience with solid foods, she may eat three or four tablespoons at a meal. Even then, the majority of her nutrition will come from breast milk or infant formula."

You can find more information at that site. Hope this helps!

Ask his pediatrician but my son started solids at 4 1/2 months once a day. By the time he was 6 months he was on twice a day. That was what his doc said for him.

My child has 3 jars of baby food a day with 2 to 4 oz of formula with those feedings. The other feeding we feed 6 ozs of formula. He drinks about 20 to 24 oz of formula every day.

I offer solids at least every 2-3hours when she's awake and nurse her when either she or I want to.

As to amount of food...I don't measure. Sometimes Kate eats as much or more than I do, and sometimes she eats very little. I make her baby food and store it in the fridge when she's not eating it.

At this age, I would feed him a tablespoon of cereal and a tablespoon of jarred or pureed food once or twice a day, plus all the milk he wants.
