The McMahon Letter and the Balfour Declaration were both promises made by British officials about who would control land in Palestine after World War One was finished.

The problem caused by these two promises was that Jewish people thought that they were being guaranteed control of Jerusalem and an independent homeland for Jews due to the Balfour Declaration; but that Arab people thought that they would have control of Jerusalem and an independent Arab state because of the McMahon Letter.

The Jews and the Arabs were probably never going to agree anyway about control of Jerusalem and Palestine generally. But the Declaration and the Letter made the confusion worse, by not being clear about the geography involved in the promises.

The best thing to do is to read the originals because they have been the subject of half-truths.
The Balfour Declaration (for what is is worth) promised the jews a homeland in Palestine under very precise conditions, and those conditions included not interferring with the religious or civil rights of the christian and muslim arabs
