As a child, i was grossly underweight for most of my childhood. I am still underweight, and recently someone told me that because i'm underweight (even though i'm not seriously underweight anymore, just a little) its very likely that I will have trouble concieving, or might miscarry most of the time. I'm very worried, because i always imagined having children. I am 18 years old, and I weigh 88 pounds, i believe i'm off by about 14-18 pounds for what my ideal weight should be. My first question is, can I still get pregnant and have children? And my other quesiton is, is there a way to tell when i'm ovulating?, as an indicator to make sure things are still going as they're supposed to every month? I've heard something about a "discharge indicator" but wasn't totally sure. Please answer my questions, I'm very worried. :(

Yes you should be able to get pregnant. Just make sure you are doing your best to keep your body healthy. My mother (who is so petite) was 85 pounds when she had my sister and was 85-90 pounds when she had my brother and I. Typically you ovulate around 14 days after the first day of period. However, it can differ from women to women. Based on your cycle, you can track it via calendar on many websites who cater to women who are TTC (yourdays.com, ibabydust.com, or babycenter.com/preconception) or you can use an ovulation urine test to help you track it, too. You can also check your CM (when it's the consistency of egg whites then more than likely your ovulating) or start charting your basal temperature. Hope this helps!

Being underweight CAN affect ovulation. Even if you are having regular bleeding that seems like a period, that is no guarantee you are ovulating. In general a woman needs 20% body fat in order to have healthy cycles and conceive.

You need to begin by nourishing your body. See the WestonAPrice.org website for excellent info on womens' nutrition. Eat a balanced, organic diet and use supplements as necessary. If you are underweight, it's very likely you are undernourished too. Babies need a lot of nutrients when they are growing, so you need to be able to eat healthy now and when you do get pregnant.

Next, I highly recommend charting your fertility signs. Your chart can tell you when you are fertile, when you are not, when you are ovulating, when to expect your next period, and when to suspect pregnancy. Your chart can also tell you if there are issues delaying conception or causing difficulty w/ carrying a pregnancy and if there are serious issues which need a doc's attention.

Some good sources for charting your fertility signs: Fertilityfriend.com (free software as well as a pay-for version and on-line charting turorial); ovusoft.com (discussion boards for many fertility related issues, much info on fertility after the pill, and a very good software for purchase). The books Taking Charge of Your Fertility (associated w/ the the ovusoft website and software), The Art of Natural Family Planning, and Garden of Fertility

a better indicator of when and if you are ovulating is your cycle length.. how long are your cycles? are they regular? usually the same each month? let me know and i'll tell you when and if you're likely ovulating!

You will ovulate on the 14th day of your cycle. For example, if you got your period on the 1st of the month then you should be ovulating on the 14th of the same month. Just count 14 days from the first day of your period, and that would be your ovulation day.
