A few classic SF (not sci-fi) authors to check out would be:

William Gibson (wrote Neuromancer, Pattern Recognition, Count Zero, etc.)
Roger Zelazny (wrote Changeling, The Chronicles of Amber, Damnation Alley, etc.)
Alfred Bester (wrote The Stars My Destination, The Demolished Man, The Deceivers, etc.)
Orson Scott Card (wrote Ender's Game, Ender's Shadow, etc.)
Pat Frank (wrote the masterpiece, Alas, Babylon)
Frank Herbert (wrote the classic Dune series)
Robert Heinlein (wrote Starship Troopers, Stranger in a Strange Land, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, and more)
Walter Tevis (The Man Who Fell to Earth)

Some modern writers to check out would be:

Karin Lowachee (wrote Warchild, Burndive, and Cagebird; her novels prove that SF can be character-driven, compelling, and relative to today's political and societal climate)
Nick Sagan (wrote Idlewild and Edenborn; Sagan follows in the tradition of Gibson and Philip K. Dick and explores the nature of reality)
Allen Steele (wrote Coyote, Spindrift, etc; good contemporary SF author who explores the evolution of politics and society)

There are plenty more. I often stumble upon great authors just by picking books up at random. Hope that helps!
