I will be playing on varsity high school football next year as a freshman. Right now, I am 6'2" 208 lbs. and 14 years old. I can run a 4.6 second 40 yard dash, can bench 220, squat 315. I am VERY fast, however not super quick and I do not have great acceleration. I have average hands and not a great arm (accuracy or power), I can block very well, I have a great vertical leap of 31". On defense, I make hard hits and am good at tackling, but I am not that great in coverage. I can stuff the run like no other, but I would also prefer to play offense and defense.

What position should I play on offense and/or defense? I have only played middle school football for one year, and I basically played everywhere on the field at one point or another?

First, how tall are your parents? How tall do you think you will be? How tall are your older bothers or sisters? Have someone measure your wing span. This will tell you alot about how long you will be. If you are going to stay at your present height I would suggest that you look at the fullback position. The fullback is a HAMMER that blows up linebackers and grades the road for the hb to break into the secondary. As you develop you will gain agility (quicks and jukes) and as your speed increases you will better understand the holes/lanes that you should run in. The experiance of blocking for someone else will help you understand the tailback position. If you see yourself growing to 6'5"+ you should look at TE on offense or even LB/DE on D. The ability to catch and hand eye talent takes time and practice. If you want better hands try catching something small like a tennis ball or golf ball. If you are having trouble catching because of the size of your hands then TE at the next level might not be the best fit. Coverage is like catching, it takes time and alot of practice. At 14, I would suggest that you watch a lot of football and deside if you want the football in your hands or you want to be a roll player. With the measureables that you have listed, most coaches are going to put you anywhere they can to be successful. This isn't a bad thing because you will get to see what you like and dislike. Also, you will see what you are good at and what you need to work on. You can make it only so far on physical ability, To be an elite player you will need to study the position you want to play as well as all postions. Knowing what the defense will do is the best way to avoid it. P. Manning study's game film for hours everyday. Good luck and have FUN!

What position have you been playing? On what basis are you being offered a spot to play varsity before the start of spring drills? I only ask because promising a spot to an incoming freshman is a rarity. The coaches must have seen something. From your size, I would guess that you could make a good linebacker or free safety, though you may find yourself on the D-Line if the guys at your HS tend toward the small side of things. On offense, I would put you at fullback, or bring you in as a second tight end in short yardage situations. Work on your hands and route-running and you could probably be a really good tight end for a pass oriented offense. Your coaches may well have a plan for you, though, and by all means do what they want and you'll see playing time.

You should be able to play both off. and def. as most high schools go that route. You may hate it but I think it will always be the trenches for you young man. If you play a 4-3 then a dt if you are on a 3-4 then a nose tackle is where you'll be best used. On offense, if you can get separation then maybe a te if not then lt is the glamour position. Good luck and don't take any HGH. It will turn you into a caveman.

Add me to the skeptics.

Here's the bad news...you have a lot more growing to do.
At 14 you are a super, world class athlete, with far more agility and coordination than your peers.

Pretending for second that everything you say is the truth...
If you are playing Varsity football; it's because the coaches know where they are going to put you.

If you feel up to going both ways...let the coaches know.
You might be the next McMillan...

I wish you all the best: whatever the case may be.

you should be a free or strong saftey they arnet super fast but the need to be able to catch. some drills for you to do is have a person be a wr the have a qb throw him the ball while you are defending and try to swat the ball down or intercept it. for speed training do 200 meter SPRINTS dont run slow but give it a 110% effort. do these 2 times a week and only do 10 each time so you wont hurt yourself. and when you do get to the first practice try as hard as you can and show the coach u want to play and he will notice that when it comes to game time

the coaches will tell you where to go. On offense you will be WR or TE, maybe RB, get some looks at QB. Def-LB, DE. Word of warning, unless you are in some village, freshman usually play for the freshman or middle school team. A few sophs will get PT on varsity. Good luck.

Yeah right. You are huge for you age. There's no way you can run a 4.6 40, and bench 220, and squat 315. You need to get a hold of reality.
