I gave cereal to my son when he was about a month old maybe a month and a half.
It did not hurt him.

My mom (Mother to 7 kids) gave all of us cereal at about 2-3 weeks of age.

If you want to go by what the world says when to give a baby cereal and baby food go to http://www.gerber.com

These people above me well i don't know about them, i am not meaning spoon feed a 4 week old i am meaning add a teaspoon of cereal to formula.

Four weeks is too young to start cereal. What your baby needs now is breast milk or formula. Giving him cereal at this age will fill him up so he won't be able to drink as much milk. That's not good for his growth and development. Ask your ped, but most peds advise to start cereal at 4-6 months.

Pretty much all of our generation was fed cereal at a young age. This was from a very different philosphy about infant feeding. It used to be thought that babies had to be on a very strict eating schedule, and they could only be fed so much per day. Most babies were also formula fed so it was easy to regulate what the baby ate. Parents were told to feed cereal and water between feedings to fill the baby up so he could make it to the next feeding. Now, we pretty much follow the thought that babies know best what they need to eat, and we respond to their needs as they go, whether with breast milk or formula. This is especially important for newborns. When babies get older, they start to seem to want something more than milk, and that's when we can start cereal.

Hope that helps!

My first son I started on gerber rice cereal at 4 weeks then veggies at 8 and fruits at 12 and the meats at 16. He has never been sick in his life and 6'2"
Then his brother I started at one week since this little piggy was wanting to down 8 ozs of formula every 3 hours at a week. So I started feeding him cereal to fill him up better. Then by the time he was 2 weeks old he was downing plates of cereal which was to much so i started him on veggies and at 3 weeks so he wouldnt get constipated from the veggies i started him on fruits. He too has never been sick in his life and is also tall and both are very muscular. I cant see waiting until babies are 6 months old to start feeding them baby food. Heck at 6 months old both my boys were drinking from baby cups a few sips of juice at each meal and were off the bottle at 9. I see babies today and at 6 months old they still cant even sit up very good. I dont know if mothers are going along with this 6 month thing because they dont want to hassle with feeding the babies with a spoon or if they really believe that it is better for a baby to not eat anything for the first 6 months. I would say if your baby is ready and wanting to eat cereal try it . One thing when starting babies on food tho is to never start two things new at the same time just in case the baby has a reaction you will know what it was that caused it. It is a good idea each new thing try for five days before starting anything else new. The baby cereal you want to start with is the rice since it is the easiest for them to digest. I am with your mom 100 % about feeding babies . It wont hurt your baby to try the cereal. If he isnt ready you will know and just wait alittle longer but you will find that by giving him cereal in the morning and then at his 10 pm or around there feeding he will start sleeping all thru the night and not wake up until like 6 am and thats because his little tummy will be full. How full can their little tummies be with only milk in them which goes right thru them. You will find you have a happier baby.

That is way too young to give a child cereal. The American Pediatric Association says that babies should start cereal around 4-6 months of age. Any younger and you may set your baby up for food allergies or illness. I started my daughter on it around 5 months. Go to www.verybestbaby.com.

Our son has constinately gotten hungry sooner and sooner after feedings, as he should, he's growing, and we just kept up-ing his ounces per feeding. he's about 4 months old now, and drinking 8-10 onces a feeding and eating sometimes every 2 hours during the day. We are debating to put him on a cereal in his milk sometime soon. Although, I(The father) would like to see him make it longer, which i think he can, We'll probably push for another month, then add the cereal to help fulfill him for longer periods of time, it just seems like he never stops eating.

My mom talked about adding cereal to my bottles at like 2 months. But medical knowlege grows over time, and they say 4-6 months now.

I started my son on cereal at 4 and a half months and that was only because he would eat ten ozs of formula every hour to hour and a half. If there is a medical reason and your Dr says to then follow Dr's orders but as far as for what your mom says that was a different time with different practices ( take sleep it used to be you NEVER put your baby on his back to sleep and how that is what is recommended)

With my first baby we started at 5 months, second at 51/2, and third baby at 6 months.

By the way, you don't have to start with baby cereal. It is a simple carbohydrate, you know. Bananas or avocados make great first foods instead.

Your baby can NOT digest cereal at this point. It will give him a terrible stomach ache, and cause him to be up all night crying and miserable. It will NOT help him sleep better. It will NOT do anything good for him. Do NOT give him cereal.

His intestines are not fully developed yet, and feeding him anything other than breastmilk (or formula, if you must) is going to cause him major discomfort, and can even lead to allergies and other problems later.

I gave my daughter rice cereal at 4 months old, and I wish I'd waited longer.

Listen to your doctor. Those letters after his name weren't just pulled out of a Scrabble box.

I didn't start giving my baby cereal until 5 months. They just don't need it early on!

YES, giving a kid cereal can be ok, and some handle it, but that doesn't make it a good idea. Don't listen to all that. What's the rush? That's up there with people who smoked while they were pregnant.... it's just not a good idea and CAN be harmful. I would wait til at LEAST 4 months, but you should really wait til six months.

Good luck, and congrats!
