Home Premium, without question. Home Basic does not have Aero glass (one of the really nice things about Vista), and lacks several other features the other versions have. Vista Business lacks Media Center (which is nice for organizing all your media), and Ultimate is overkill unless you need extreme security encryption on your hard drive.
Home Premium has the Aero theme, Media Center, and basically everything you NEED for it, so that's the one that I'd recommend.

Right now vista isn’t worth using. It's still new, it has bugs and you cant get everything to work with it yet... its just a pain.
Every time a new OS is released you should wait at LEAST 7-8 months before upgrading. That gives time for all the other software companies to update their software to be compatible with the new OS. and Microsoft will release official service packs that fixes a LOT of its problems. For example, Windows XP was crap before SP2 was released... Right now, windows XP with SP2 is the best choice by FAR.
Long story short, you dont NEED vista for daily and school use... not only do you not need it, it will make your life a living hell if you get vista right now. stick with windows XP.

Home Premium is used for basic student and and fun using ultimate infuses all the buisness items and has a encryptor for files called "bitlocker" it works well but home premium is your best bet because basic does not have all the media capabilities.

None of them... yet. In about 6 months to a year Vista will be a better system, but right now, it's recommended you stick with Windows XP.
