I writing a story about a group of friends being captured by gang members. When one gets free, he runs away leaving the others behind. I need an animal top represent him in a thing that the friends do.

Rabbit. A rabbit is skillful at getting rid of an attacker. It will run top speed at a wire fence, slip between the wires and make the fox or dog crash into the fence.
I had a rabbit that played with my dogs, and had no fear. One day a strange dog got into the yard and took off after the rabbit. The rabbit started to give the signal that means "don't chase me, I'm not in the mood" that he used with our dogs; realized this dog was not playing; turned and ran top speed toward my brother's wagon; made a quick right turn; and the dog crashed into the wagon. And this was a rabbit that had never been attacked in his life before! Imagine the evasive powers of a wild rabbit!
I recently saw a video of a rabbit attacking and chasing a large snake too, so they can be aggressive when needed. A rabbit can sometimes jump over its enemy and give a powerful kick, so I've read.

Most herd animals ... Zebra, buffalo, horse, gazelle ....they all run for their lives and know that some will not make it. They have no group defense instinct that I've ever heard of or seen. They are built for flight not fight.
