Learn notes how they relate to the fretboard. Then learn the construction of chords and how they are constrcted using those notes. After you are able to name the three notes that make up a basic cord move on to scales. Get a book that will help you maybe call a local guitar teacher. And be like hello I am young kid wanting to learn guitar but can not afford lessons. So I was wondering if you could possibly reccomend some books you would give your students. And then thank him for his time and say sorry for bothering him. Good Luck

You'll probably never "teach yourself"- find someone else who wants to learn and-preferably-shares similar musical tastes- Your best bet is to look for a local nonprofit music school or community college-they frequently offer group lessons-if finances are a challenge, scholarships are often available if need can be demonstrated- the instructors often have degrees in the field, and the best part is that you're in with others at your level-that way, you can meet up outside class for jam sessions and practices-I've got 20+ years of playing and gigging on the side(I'm an engineer until 5 pm) and having one or more jambuddies/practice partners really made the difference for me when I was a beginner-Good Luck!

I agree with tozarondanose ... start with chords. Here's a cool site I found for ya ... http://www.chordbook.com/guitarchords.php . You can select which root chord you'd like and what type, then press strum to hear it. Play around ... it should help you to learn the basics. Also, if you need something else to help you read guitar tablature, here's another site to give you the basics there ... http://www.guitaralliance.com/guitar_lessons/guitar_chords/index.htm . Good luck!

G,C,D,E, Em, Am chords--then scales.
a good tip: Don't use a pick until your fingers are trained and once you start playing bar chords.

learn all the chords first, then learn scales.
soloing will be easy once you know scales and all the different types.
keys are important too.
