The northern black widow lives in Michigan, as well as the larger semi-tropical variety in some places.
Black widows rarely go into a house, but prefer unheated outbuildings, wood piles, rock piles, any sheltered spot.

The Northern Black Widow has been reported from at least Benzie, Berrien Livingston and Wexford counties in Michigan. These records are
from a fairly old publication, and there may be more from other places by now. The Southern
Black Widow, Latrodectus mactans, is not listed
from Michigan in this paper, but may possibly
occur there in the extreme south part of the state.

The Northern Black Widow, Latrodectus variolus,
is primarily a woodland spider building its webs
at ground level in northern states. It does not
often come into buildings unless they are in wooded areas. The Southern Black Widow is
more common in buildings, woodpiles, and dark
places generally, usually in more open rather than
forested places.
