hes not emo, there is a difference between emo and gay (most people dont realize that). your son is on the less heterosexual side of that line.

Well, an emo is an emotional person who thinks about death and cuts themself to feel the pain. They typically wear dar clothing and have their hair covering their eyes. Most emos are solitary and have little friends and listen to screamo (rock music with lyrics consisting of screams).
Now your son. This is a bit confusing. He could be an emo by the way he dresses, but then again, emos don't usually have tons and tons of friends besides other emos and have sleepovers. No offence, but your son sounds like he is gay and depressed which is why he would dress that way.

An emo is a person who has a hatred for standard mankind and has probably been mistreated in life. These individuals usually believe that noone likes them and/or think less of themselves. Most emos have a negative perspective on life and see life as a waiting period for death. To see if someones is an emo ask them questions like what they want from life, what there goals are, marriage, friendship, and so on. If they give very negative or rude answers, or get offensive and upset then they may be headed that way.You should NOT ignore signs of depression, no matter how small they are. Try to be nice at all times and avoid embarassing your child, and not only in front of his friends. Children are very sensitive and fragile between the age of 8 - 18. Small complains can be taken as insults which tend to scar young ones.

Well, kids change often as they develop their self-concept. If someone labeled your son as an emo, they are an idiot. yeah, there is this new "emo" word that people call other people who are emotional, wear black, and dress in tight pants. But in reality, who cares? He's your son whether he's emo, gay, atheist, or eskimo. and at least he had friends and some type of personality. Be content with the fact that you have a healthy child who likes being who he is.

'Emo' is really just a type of music which derived from metal and a branch of hardcore punk known as "emotional hardcore." In general, it's just based on the music, and somehow got connected with gothic fashion and corporations like Hot Topic. Considering that you're his mother, if you're giving him money to buy these clothes and such.. maybe you could cut him off and tell him it makes you uncomfortable. You have the option to not let him go to these sleepovers, and you could even take it to the extreme of taking off the lock on his door, or even taking off his door altogether. It's mostly just a teenager thing, and teenagers are pretty messed up to begin with. Talk to him about his feelings and your concerns, but he probably won't listen. Again, a teenager thing, lol.

emo. i think are really depressed, but it does not mean that if he is depressed and secretive that he is emo, most emo people are artistic, i dont know i havent heard you say that your son has been doing poems or songs, if he acts and cries like a woman , he is in touch with his sensuality, its not bad to cry once in a while, but if he is doing it quite too often , i think your son might probably be homosexual, and is resorting to acting extremely private cause he cannot say straight to you who he is.

Well, your son sounds emo to me....but I am not sure whether the symptoms you have stated should be taken very seriously or if he is just buying into the subculture of emo.
See, emo kids all listen to the same music, wear the same clothes (that you stated), sometimes wear makeup, and seem depressed and very well emo....tional.
Sometimes, kids just do this to fit into a group and have friends. It is just a culture to them...but, sometimes kids act this way because of real issues that should be taken seriously. If he is really depressed, and has trouble keeping/making friends and he gets upset frequently, he may just need to be understood, accepted, spoken to, and taken care of.
If it seems to be a fad, or seems to be caused by his friends and average teenage attitude, then I wouldn't worry about it.

emo is short for 'emotional'..he does sound emo, but its not necessarily a bad thing, its just a way of dress and stuff like that. u can't just stop him from being emo, cuz thats just who he chooses to be. he does sound emotionally unstable though. you should get his some help. don't but in too much, cuz that'll just get him annoyed at you considering he's so private. but talk to him straight up about whats going on, try to get him to talk to you and have a fluent trusting conversation.
consider a school therapist or something if he's so depressed.
hope everything works out.

emo comes from "emotional hardcore" which is a sub genre of hardcore punk music but nowadays id much more a life-style...I don't have to describe it cause u just described it above....ur son sounds like an emo an someway goth and u shouldn't want to stop him dress and act like that...is what he wants, what he feels...is u'r son and u should love him no matter if he is a prep, hippie, nerd, goth or emo...they're just stupid labels...let u'r son be who he wants to be...my opinion

Emos listen to a style of music culled from the word emotional.
Emo's prefer to sit in a dark corner and cry to themselves because noone can feel the pain they do. They are prone to drug use, self-mutilation (i.e.: cutting), homosexuality/bisexuality and males wearing makeup. In other words, they are starved for attention.
So do he and yourself a favor and drag your butts into counseling. While many emo's are merely going through a phase, it is a potentially devestating turn in their adolescence.
