A couple of months old and the baby will start to look around and pay attention to his surroundings. The best crib mobiles are the ones with lots of colours and ones that also play some music. Disney makes a great one with Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck and Pluto....very colourful and gentle music for the baby. Black objects will bore the baby to bits...the more colour you have in his environment the better.

Black, white, and red are great colors for babies. My baby started enjoying her mobile at 2 1/2 to 3 months. We moved it from her crib to her changing table, though. The stimulation of the mobile (and fans, lights, etc.) kept her awake.

My children noticed at about 4 to 6 weeks of age. Bright colors and multi-pattern objects makes to child notice more.

i would say 3 months . yes the mobiles with the black designs are great for their eyes. newborns cant see that far so its pointless to worry about it that early on.
