The best thing to do with snakes is to hold them really close to your face, and sing it really bad tunes, while stretching it as much as you possibly can.
If the snake feels the need to bite you, don't try and stop it, it's a perfectly natural reaction.

I was bitten by a copperhead only less than three weeks after I got back from graduate school. The wound became necrotic and I was in the hospital for two days! No real point to the story, but I like to tell it from time to time because I cannot believe I got bitten like that!
