It is so expensive! And they get so picky about Paypal and other rules. But truth is that they seem to be the most popular. Are there other popular high traffic sites to use?

Start your own website. I helped a friend
with a motorcycle website and he was able to
move motorcycles this winter. Ebay was dead.

Note: Normally, it will take six to twelve months to product good results. You'll need to find a website development course
like the one Ken Evoy has. Be careful, there's alot of
GRQ (Get Rich Quick) stuff out there that will drain your cashbox.

If you are talking about the occasional sale, then use craigslist.org

If you have a store, then eBay is probably your best bet (unfortunately)
I personally think they are a prime example of what is wrong with corporate America.
