I live over seas and one way is Americans are freakin loud. Also in places like Germany they can tell because of your clothes, (american writing) and shoes (they wear pointed mostly and americans will wear rounded as well as pointed.) I think that, atleast were I am, americans are less curteous then the locals. I am in the military and I would much rather shop of base because having experienced courtesy of base, its hard to go back and deal with rude people. This is of course a generalization. I still love Americans, we are the best.

Don't forget the one thing that always gives an American away, is the way they handle their silverware. An American takes a knife and a fork, cuts up a piece of food, then puts the knife down, transfers the fork to the right hand, and eats. A European keeps the knife in his right hand and fork in left all the time.
I was born in Prague and lived in USA for many years...Even though I speak good Czech, they can tell and say that I "sing" in Czech.
Actually there's one more thing. Americans wear loud clothes. On the other hand, they they usually don't dye their hair orange or green, and don't have metal studs sticking out all over their face like some Europeans.

Ugly American Syndrome-- demanding to have things done NOW, rudeness, ignorance of the local customs, being loud and obnoxious, poor knowledge of geography, and insisting on speaking English.
Obvious cameras.
Obesity.
Unwillingness to eat the local food.
Support of Bush and his cronies, and making sure everyone within a 5 mile radius knows about it.

Clothing-- Bright colors and bright white sneakers. :o)
Only speaking English
The way you eat-- Europeans eat with the fork in the left hand
General attitude and more casual manner--- If you want to blend in, be formal and polite and watch your volume when you speak.
Also, lots of little things are a tip-off: unfamiliarity with the money, public transport, etc., as well as the same things that peg tourists as such no matter where they are...
