I think your best bet is a rat. They are nocturnal but perfectly happy to play with you all day. With few exceptions, they have a wonderful temperament, and don't bite. They are not skittish like guinea pigs or grumpy like hamsters.
They are fairly tough for their size, I mean if they fall they won't get hurt. Unlike hamsters, by the way.
Get the rat a big running wheel and keep it lubricated so it won't be noisy at night. You can use Vaseline or cooking oil for this.
Don't be prejudiced, consider getting a rat.

Honestly, I raised 4 children and have has all kinds of animals around them. We've had everything from goats to sheep, cats to dogs, newts to iguanas, mice to rabbits, and fish. My children were taught to respect the animals since all of them bite. We don't have a farm either. I have rescued animals all my life and now my children are helping with this. It all started with a stray cat named Felix my grandfather brought home when I was 4. 36 years later I'm still at it but only do small animals now. Usually I recommend not to have pets with young children when there's none already in the home.
Stay with the fish until the child is a few years older, but take her to the local shelter and teach your child about the different animals there. If they have any small animals like rabbits or Guinea pigs ask to privately visit with them and show her the proper way to hold them, play with them and talk to them (quiet voices) is what I have taught mine.

Get a fish tank....get a turtle...lol, they are cute or one of those lizards...lol
Not trying to be stupid here, but can't you have a pet with a 2 yo? My boys both were raised up around dogs. When they were 2 and 5, we had a Cocker Spaniel. Sampson was the most protective dog, he allowed no one to come close to the boys, if they did...I knew it. But he followed them every step.
We now have a 2 1/2 year old Lab, who we've had since a pup. She is the equivalent of Sampson, loyal, follows them every step they take, is a play mate, and most of all is very protective of us.
So...I really don't see a deal with dogs, but..lol, each to their own.

Guinea pigs are active during the day, and so are rabbits. If you aren't looking for something fuzzy or nocturnal, maybe a fairly docile lizard, such as a uromastyx or bearded dragon. You need to do a lot of research & investment in proper care of these reptiles, though, so they live a healthy life, and teach your child to handle the animals gently.

Guinea pigs are diurnal, so maybe you were doing something wrong there?
A rabbit would be good, you can have a rabbit in the house, and litter box train it. a mini rex would be a good rabbit for children, or a holland lop, as they are small and very good natured-my mini rex has been handled by small children, and he seems to just know to be careful with them, so just sits quietly and lets them pet him.

there are many pets that are great for children of that age. fish are a great start and kids love them. some childern like those gel antfarms because they eat the gel and you dont have to care for them. just watch them. some like bunnies too. turtles also make good pets, but ask about size ranges, because some grow very big.

How about a chinchilla? Or a sugar glider? They are both really cute... or a hedgehog!! They are adorable!
Have you thought about snakes or lizards? You said you wanted something you could handle... not sure if you're looking for something cuddly.

Gold Fish or a Parakeet, as those are fairly simple to take care of.
