I agree it takes time.Here are some ideas:
1. Watch how they interact with others, especially when they are in more of a power position - such as interacting with younger kids.
2. Are they truthful?
3.Do they take short-cuts or follow through on commitments?
4.How do they treat animals?
5.Here's a biggie: Regarding other peers you respect - what is their opinion of him/her? I include this because I have known guys who were really great around a girl they wanted to impress and treated others very differently.
6. How does the guy or gal handle a disagreement and how do they talk about someone with whom they disagree?
7. How do they treat their parents? What is their family like?
8. Talk to someone who's known him/her for longer than you.
When you know those things, you have a good look at their heart. Naturally the longer a period of time you know the person, the more sure your conclusion will be.

As a mental health practitioner with 20+ years experience, now retired, I can only emphasize how hard that is to do, since people are very deceptive. I know I want time with them in various situations to see how they react. I also want to see where they direct their lives to, and if their demeanor is candid without being rude, and honest without being blunt, and most of all being Godly without being preachy. If they meet those qualities, they surely are "good at heart". God Bless you.

It takes time....but usually if they smile and it's not fake....and if they have a sense of humor about themselves, then they might be OK....if they seem to take an interest in you and your opinions ...all these things are good signs, but it still takes time to be sure.

You can't really tell. Everyone has a certain dark side to him/her. If you discovered that a person who is really kind and nice has a dark side, would you immediately write him/her off as not-so-nice-and-kind anymore? You can't really judge. =)

well you cant judge a book by its cover but if you unlock the there side of the car door and open it for them will they unlock yours before you get to the drivers side of the car?

well robbie, i think that it is by their actions. what they say and do. some people can have a good spirit about them. then there is some that do not.
