Many diagnostic and clinical study decisions/conclusions are based on statistics. If you want to be a nurse and want to be able to read and understand the medical language of the people you will work with (doctors and lab folks)it is very helpful to understand basic statistics.

that being said i know a lot of nurses who have done quite well with almost no basic understanding of statistics.

Are you asking why the course is a pre-requisite for nursing? Basically, to prove that you have thinking skills. If it is a required course, it is just to hone thinking skills in general.
