Goldfish aren't fat. At least, not as in having fat deposits like humans. It is just the shape that they have been bred to have. The particular type of goldfish you are referring to is called Fancy Goldfish. These goldfish have been bred over many, many generations to have this particular body type. And, depending on whether it's a fantail, veiltail, oranda, ranchu, lionhead, ryukin or pearlscale, the body types are even more individualized and specific. Then the breeders can also breed specific eye characteristics into goldfish which are evidenced by telescope eyes, bubble eyes and celestial eyes. Breeders choose fish that have a particular shape, fin type and color that is appealing to them and then, through careful cross-breeding, further breed these tendencies into the next generation of fish, exaggerating the previous generation's characteristics. Some goldfish aren't "fat" because, again, they have been bred to have a different skeletal structure. They seem long and skinny. These goldfish are commons, comets, shubunkins, jakins and wakins. So, goldfish aren't "fat." They just have a different skeletal structure that makes them look "fat."

Goldfish aren't naturally fat. In nature they are a slightly heavy bodied fish with dull grayish coloration. Just as man bred them to have brighter colors, he has bredd in genetic flaws causing twisted spines, deformed body cavities and all kinds of other shapes and characteristics in goldfish. Not only goldfish of course, but they are one of the most commonly seen examples.

1000's of years of selective breeding. If you really wanted to know you would have to talk to someone from China a really long time ago.
Actually the only goldfish attributed to North American breeding is the Comet. Funny that Americans made a skinny one.

Most goldfishes are fat. Sometimes they can get so fat that they explode. The reason is that they eat all the time and they actually think everything is food. I used to have goldfishes and I kept feeding them because they looked so hungry to me. They kept eating and eating and eating. They got so fat and at last they died. Then my brother told me that they won't stop eating (even though they are really full) and that you will have to control their diet.

goldfish are fat simply because thats the way their genetics are built either that or the fish your talking about are pregnant also, you probably feed them too much. only 2 times a day is recommended

I have a few along with my others. Mine are streamlined
but fish are like people I suppose. Different shapes.
They may not be fat, just well rounded or BBF to be
politically correct
