I haven't seen the show in a long time. I'm surprised to hear a male narrator on the show. Who is he? Why did he begin being the narrator?

Steven Culp (Rex Van De Kamp) will reprise his character for an episode later in the season. However rather than a flashback appearance like at the end of season two, he'll return with a twist: Rex will narrate the episode.
According to a news item at Yahoo!, Mary Alice (who has narrated every new episode since the show's premiere) will take a rest as Rex does the other-worldly narration of the show.
And in another twist for Desperate Housewives, the episode will reportedly focus on the male characters of the series (hence Rex's turn at narrating the show). It will also allow him to share Mary Alice's ability to comment on events after his death, including perhaps his thoughts on Orson marrying Bree.
Culp left Desperate Housewives when his character was killed off at the end of season one. Apart from his guest spot at the end of season two, he is also attached to a new TV pilot Traveler and he appeared in the TV movie Deck the Halls. His recurring role on The West Wing also came an end due to the show's cancellation.

It's Rex van de Kamp, Bree's late husband. This is the first time he has been narrator. I sure wish they'd never killed him off! Tonight's episode was supposed to focus on the men of Wisteria Lane, hence a male narrator, but really the women still were major players.

It was Rex Van der Camp, the first husband of Bree. It was a one episode only, and Mary Alice will return to his normal job after this episode.

I think it is the guy who used to play Bree van de Camps husband, Rex. Creator just wanted a change for a while I guess.

he is Bree's first husband rex who died of a heart attack. This was a one episode thing. (TV GUIDE MAGAZINE)
