is this common? what should i do next? this happened like 10 minutes ago...

Very common for girls to sublux, or dislocate the kneecap. When you are knock-kneed, and the quadricep muscles pull, especially with the knee bent, the kneecap can ride over the edge of the femur in the trochlar groove. It it goes all the way, the kneecap will be toward the side of the knee, if it only goes part way, your instincts take over, and you straighten out the knee, causing it to pop back into place, and then hurt. Keep it straight, put ice on it and see a physical therapist, or sports medicine MD. This also is more common in people with loose ligaments, often called being double-jointed.

If the bones in the knee joint were actually displaced, then no that is not normal, and yes you need to see a doctor. It seems you have stretched or torn the connective tissue. This may or may not need medical help. Is there pain or swelling? Is it bruised or discolored? Is it starting to become painful. You will know more about the extent of the injury tomorrow if not sooner.

As long as there is no pain, nothing should be broken or torn. It sounds like you may have suffered a dislocation. You might have weak ligaments or muscles surrounding your knee that could predispose you to future problems. Next time you go to the doctor, you might want to mention what happened and see if he recommends further investigation.

i had about the same problem at work. we make bumpers for trucks we carry them onto our shoulders which i think might off set us a bit.
sometimes when i step off onto the floor i won,t feel my left knee and almost go down to the floor. it gets dislocated very easy and very pain ful. a doctor will tell you to stay off it for two weeks and put ice onto it. cartilages have a lot to do with it.

It's probably ok but you should have gone to the hospital for x-ray just in case you tore something. If you feel pain later, don't ignore it. Better safe than sorry.
