A man is trying to cross a river. He has a wolf, a goat, and a cabbage. He can only carry one other thing in the boat at a time. If he leaves the goat alone with the wolf, the wolf eats the goat. If he leaves the cabbage alone with the goat, the goat eats the cabbage. How can he get all three across?

Take the goat across first. Come back alone. Take the cabbage the second time, and on the ride back, bring the goat. Take the wolf with you on the third trip and leave it with the cabbage. Return alone and, on the fourth trip across, bring the goat.

If you want, you could substitute a cayote, a chicken, and lettuce. I learned the riddle with a wolf, goat and cabbage.

This is a logic question. Obviously, the chicken can't be left alone with the coyote or the lettuce. Your boat can only hold one object besides you. So, you take the chicken across the river and leave it there (assuming it won't wander) and cross the river back to the lettuce and the coyote. Take the coyote across, drop it off and pick up the chicken. take the chicken back across the river, drop it off and pick up the lettuce. take the lettuce across and drop it off with the coyote. then you can go back for the chicken.
