press alt (hold on to it) while typing the number, then let go after and it should appear

Allot of them come from pressing the alt key and using the number pad on the left of your keyboard. The music signs and a few others I've seen here I don't know where they come from.

press the alt key then one of the numbers on the key pad on the side of your key board
alt 1 = ☺
alt 2 = ☻
alt 3 = ♥
and so on

they're ASCII textual content characters. they're made by keeping down the ALT key and pressing a chain of numbers. in case you do a seek on ASCII textual content, you will see a catalogue of numbers and their indicators.
