We went to make it in good time (average is almost 15 hours). Do we run the risk of coming across closed gas stations or should we be fairly okay?

We will be taking I-57 through IL and then connecting back up with I-55.

I took I-57 to I-55 when I went to Texas (Stay on I-55 route to New Orleans) and yes it's excellent at night , you'll find 24hr Gas stations all the way.

Before you go take a look at the weather outlook for the region you'll be traveling thru. if temp is above freezing and no bad storms are in forecast you should be fine.

If you need interesting things to do on the way, do some AM radio DXing , once you get to about Kankakee and further south some Chicago stations will be to weak to receive and higher powered AM stations from as far as CUBA and Mexico can be heard.

Need Cheap Gas look at : http://www.gasbuddy.com/gb_gastemperaturemap.aspx

This map is so cool, just look for the dark Green areas, and then you know what town to gas up the car in , After passing Champaign you'll find gas as cheap as $2.34 a Gallon in the Matoon area, just make a note to your self where the good gas prices are on the way to New Orleans.

Enjoy the trip and stay safe , rest stops are great for stretching the legs and some cold water to your face always feels refreshing.

No problem with gas. I've driven that route many times. The only problem I see is that you are going to hit I-10 outside New Orleans between 3 - 5 P.M. It will take you approximately one hour to drive on into N.O. and you will probably run into some traffic so make sure you know exactly where you are going and which exit to take.

You should be ok as long as you fill up before you leave, and along the interstate there's lots of 24 hour stations. My husband and I did it from Columbus, OH to Tallahassee, FL last September, and it took 14 hours. Good luck it'll be a looonnnggg drive!
