Books, like any kind of printed media will yellow slightly in the sunlight. Slight tanning would mean that it has yellowed visibly and that pages are no longer purely white.

It could mean one of two things. Possibly both.

1. This book has been on a cruise
2. This book has been to the beach.

Some collectors will also say that the book could have been in a tanning booth, but I find this unlikely, as it is nearly impossible to read while in a tanning booth.
