partier around. She got drunk every single night and smoked a pack of cigarettes every day for like the past 10 years. Now she accidentally got pregnant and she told us she is keeping the baby and that she has quit smoking and drinking 3 days ago. So my question is won't it still hurt the baby even if she quits drinking and smoking now because of all the damage she did to herself before she got pregnant? I have no intention of confronting her, I am just wondering.

Thanks!

Her and loads and loads of other women who used to party before they became parents of healthy children, yes. Don't worry about it; you can't really pre-damage a fetus.

Does she eat well? All that dancing was probably at least good exercise...

Well, despite what everyone else has said, if she was driniking until 3 days ago, then yes, she may have done some harm to the fetus. The brain does a lot of development in the first 8 weeks of life. Usually most people don't realize they are pregnant for about 2-3 weeks after it happens. So, if it happened unplanned (by accident) and she just found out, more than likely the baby will have some level of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome because she had alcohol WHILE she was pregnant. Everyone else here has said they quit BEFORE they got pregnant. That's different. If she quit BEFORE she got pregnant the baby should do just fine.

depends entirely how soon into the pregnancy she quit drinking and smoking.

If she was only two weeks along when she quit drinking and smoking, there was likely no damage. And if she lives healthy for the whole pregnancy, she will probably have a healthy baby. Won't matter that she drank a lot before she got pregnant.

However, If she drank heavily during the first three months or 12 weeks of the pregnancy, her baby will most likely have fetal alcohol syndrome, an irreversible, lifelong disability that is similar to mental retardation.

What's done is done, but now that she realizes that she is pregnant and taking care of herself and the baby by not drinking or smoking just goes to show you how much character she really has. She's doing the right thing by quitting. If she stops early enough there maybe no harm during the development of the pregnancy and end up having a healthy baby. I'm so proud of her by doing the right thing for herself and her baby !!! Way to go!!!

Well, the mother's poor health can't be good for the child -- that's for sure. If she is sincerely not smoking and drinking now, and she keeps that up for the whole nine months, then she and the baby will probably be ok. The trick is that she needs to practice a healthy lifestyle, too, like proper nutrition, all the recommended prenatal care appointments, etc.

Well it's impossible for her to undo any damage that she may have done in the past, but what's important is that she takes cares of herself from now on while she's pregnant. She should not just stop the drinking and smoking but she also needs to eat healthy and take her vitamins and keep her dr. appts.

It may, it may not. My sister smoked in the beginning of her pregnancy.. said she stopped.. I don't know if she did or not to be honest. My niece was born on her due date and less than 5 lbs.

I also know a woman who drank, smoked, and smoked pot until she was at least 7 months pregnant (when she finally admitted she was pregnant- she claims it's when she "found out"- YEAH RIGHT!) and her baby was born over 6 lbs and fine. That baby was lucky.

I used to be the same way as her. I used to smoke pot too. But then i found out i was pregnant and i quit all that.

My baby is perfectly healthy and so am i.

I don't think you need to worry, unless she starts smoking and drinking again.

Certainly it is better she quit the noxious toxins.

However horrible a past may seem, to strive for a bright future for the sake of another is pure humanity, and not of the beastial side of them. If you strive to be glad for a person for these reasons, and reinforce their choice of what's evidently better, simply by being happy with them for good, then you've helped them. Even to remember the past is to potentially add sadness, and likelihood of regression, so strive ever to be happy for her. She is indeed blessed, and together you shall be so blessed if your love and happiness aids her.
