I believe I have detected mold growing in my basement. What's the cheapest, most effective way to eliminate the mold and prevent it from returning? And, how dangerous is it?

Mold grows because of moisture, eliminate the moisture by sealing the walls and dehumidifying. Straight bleach should be left to soak on the mold, protect yourself from the fumes.

First you must remove the mold. A cheap way is to spray with diluted bleach ( about 1/3 bleach ). Some you will have to scrub. Let soak until the mold turns to a lighter color then wash off. Ventilate the basement and dry it good. Seal the walls and floor with Damn Tight ( this will eliminate seepage ) . Put in a ventilation fan to keep moisture down. Some mold is VERY dangerous !!!

Left untreated, mold can be deadly, can cause severe respitory illnesses and even nerve damage. You can remove it yourself with bleach like others have suggested in the mean time, however, you need to get to the root of the problem! Where is the mold originating and do you have a leak somwhere? If you don't look after that, you could have mold in behind all your drywall which could be toxic! Your best bet is to have a professional look at the problem. Costlier than you had likely planned on but better to spend a few bucks now than thousands down the road replacing carpets, drywall and any other finishing!

I have a friend that owns a mold company. I was told the best and safest way of removing and preventing is bleach. I used a bleach/water solution and it worked great. The worse the mold the higher bleach vs water in the solution but 1/3 bleach to 2/3 water should do the trick and is safest.

You must first kill the mold. Spray with bleach water.

Then you need to keep the place dry. Remove the moisture from the air. A good dehumidifier cost about $200

I agree with everyone above you may also want to hook your dryer up to vent outside. That is the number 2 cause of mold in houses.
