Not the typical resignation circumstances, but I have been offered a job which I cannot turn down. I definitely need to give 2wk notice to my current employer.... anyone have any reference links to help on a letter of resignation. (I'm assuming I should submit a letter rather than verbally giving notice). Also, do I need to give my reasoning for leaving? If so, what is/is not professionally acceptable..... what's the standard here? Appreciate any answers/suggestions. Thanks

You do not have to give a reason, but in this circumstance you should be up front. In this situation, I would much more prefer an employee to come to me with a letter. So both verbally and in writing. The letter doesn't have to be long.

Explain you are very please to have this opportunity to work with a great team. State you have found a better paying position, or a job that is more conducive to your long term plans. Be very gracious. Let them know when your last day will be. And state you will do whatever is reasonable to get the next person ready to take over for you.

Offer to work two weeks, but don't be surprised if they let you loose earlier. You may want to arrange with your new company that you can come on board earlier too.

Don't give your notice until you have cleared a background and drug test, if applicable. Also, in a situation like this, you may not be eligible for employment with that company again, so don't be shocked if that is the case.

You're right, you need to formally resign and it's best to do so in writing.

Simply say that you're tendering your 2 week notice of resignation. There's no reason to give any additional info including what you're going to do next. Then talk with your manager saying you want to leave on a good note and you're going to work the entire 2 week period, then do it.

having been there such a short time, maybe notice not really required (if on probation period, maybe no notice required on either side?) but anyway, you want to give it--maybe employer will say thanks, and show you the door immediately anyway--doubt that you really need to say anything other than you have been offered opportunity which you feel in your best interests to pursue. Be nice & polite and don't burn any bridges--sounds like you are trying to be considerate anyway, a Good Thing.
