There are two film versions. I barely recall the older one, but as for the new one I can say they share a title and not much else. Yes, there is an alien invasion, there is a panic as people strive to deal with this threat and in the end it is a virus that destroys the invaders. But the novel was written at the end of the 19th century and is set in England. There are no annoyingly adorable children. And the book does a better job of detailing the psychological consequences of the invasion among the human population.

Read the book.

If you're talking the Gene Barry version, not so very different, given how different the world was in 1953 from what it had been 60 years before. In the more recent version, the technology is finer, and a great deal of hokum has been added. I think Welles, had he been around, would have rather liked the Barry version but tossed up his nose at the Cruise.
